Thanks for sounding the alarm, Sam. It's horrendous news. There must be more than nutrition education to solve this problem, though. For the kids who are numbing out with food (medicating their emotional pain by eating), drugs further disconnect them from their bodies/emotions. I loved reading how your story turned out! Thanks for sharing...

Jeanie, thanks for reading. It's so true and food is so powerful! I truly believe that many of the problems we currently face beyond health can be solved by eating better. There is a current disconnect in what "food" actually is these days which is a big problem. It became very apparent in my own life how everything changed when I began to think seriously about health and nutrition. This earlier post tells some of my story in a little more detail. https://deardadhealth.substack.com/p/snowball

I enjoyed reading your story, Sam! This sentence (in my opinion) holds the key to your ability to sustain the dietary changes you decided to make. "...it was tangibly noticeable to my fourteen-year-old-male-brain that my life was better. Regardless of any weight that I lost, I was happier, more engaged in school, more active, and more driven."

And I agree that there is a disconnect about what food is (and how we eat it, for that matter.) At risk of appearing to "see your post and raise "you one (😂), I share a few thoughts here. https://restorationcenter.substack.com/p/real-food-and-the-gift-of-chewing

Agree 100 percent. We need nutrition education in schools to deal with the obesogenic environment not a quick fix, and for those who recommend a lifetime on drugs, do they even know what the long term side effects could be?

Right on. I would also add basic cooking instruction. For some reason preparing food has become very intimidating for many. It's true that cooking food can be an art form done by highly skilled chefs, but there are plenty of basic skills that anyone can learn (quite quickly) which would promote healthier eating. Being in the kitchen is fun and we need more people to get in there and make their own meals.
