Dear Dad,
If you were hungry and looking to eat something that was 500 calories which would you choose?
If you reach for the cheesy dish those calories will add up quite quick with plenty of room left for hunger (meaning the chances that you stick to your 500 calorie target are close to nil). On the other hand, a 500 calorie snack of fruits and vegetables will fill you up, probably before you hit the 500 calorie mark.
A problem with many of our meals and snacks is that the centerpieces are large portions of high calorie foods like meat, dairy, and simple carbs with oil or butter. When we load up on these calorie dense foods we end up eating a higher number of calories just to feel full.
Instead, try loading up on fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. If you do, you will have access to mountains of food but still eat fewer calories. You will feel satisfied, nourished, and energetic.
With Love,
JSR
